Silverwing

(Silberflügel)

by Kenneth Oppel

Summary: Shade is one of the newborns of the Silverwings, a bat colony. But he's different from the others: He's weak, a real runt - and he's curious. That's why he wants to get a glimpse of the sun although his kind is forbidden to see it, banished from daylight thousands of years ago by the owls and beasts. For revenge the owls burn down the Silverwings' nursery and the bats have to leave early for Hibernaculum, the place in the south where they hibernate and males and females get together again. On the way there, Shade gets seperated from the other in a storm. On the island he was blown to, he meets Marina, a Brightwing. Together they set off to find Shade's colony. On their way they encounter dschungle bats, that make the owls start a war, closely escape a colony of rats and try to find the meaning of the bands given by the Humans to Marina, Shade's lost father and many other bats. Are they really part of Nocturna's Promise? Is the bat goddess helping them to get the day back?

Comment: A nice, short and enjoyable story. I like the idea of telling a story through a bat's eyes. Shade is a character you can easily identify with.

A Spot of Bother

(Der wunde Punkt)

by Mark Haddon

Summary: The whole family is a mess. Father George goes mad after he discovered an eczema on his hip, convinced that it is cancer, mother Jean has an affair with her husband's former collegue. Daughter Katie can't decide if she is in love with her current boyfriend or not; the wedding is already planned. Son Jamie doesn't want to bring his boyfriend. He is convinced that this would be better for Tony, who seems to see that a bit different and breaks up with Jamie. What will happen when all these problematic family members get together?

Comment: Like in his other book "The curious incident of the dog in the night time", Haddon deals again with a mentally disturbed character without making any judgement. It is funny to watch all these people struggle with their lives and finally meet, giving the story some more or less unexpected turns.

Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows

(Harry Potter und die Heiligtümer des Todes)

by J. K. Rowling

Summary: Harry's mission is clear; he has to find all the remaining horkruxes and destroy them to kill Voldemort. After an escalated transfer to the Burrow and Bill and Fleur's wedding which is apruptly ended by the news that the ministry has been taken over, Harry, Ron and Hermione can't lose anymore time to start their search for the horkruxes. It is a tough challenge for all three of them. Will they be able to find all of the horkruxes? What are the items for Dumbledore left them behind? And do the deadly hallows really exist?

Comment: The final part of Harry Potter is packed with suspense. I couldn't stop myself from reading. It is the ending the great Harry Potter series deserves.
